The Hunt for El Dorado : Uncovering the Legend through a Glass of Beer

Arbor Brewing Company has recently announced their latest creation: The El Dorado Lager— crafted with a blend of El Dorado hops and other carefully selected ingredients.

This hop variety is characterized by its tropical fruit and citrus flavors, with notes of pineapple, mango, and grapefruit. It also has a distinctive floral aroma with hints of pine and earthy undertones.

The El Dorado hop is often used in the brewing of hop-forward beers to give them a bold, fruity flavor and aroma. This hop offers a delightful balance of sweetness, bitterness, and complexity in the beer.

But what makes El Dorado so special? Well, it all lies in the name. El Dorado is also the name of a mythical city of gold, an empire of unimaginable wealth that has captivated explorers and adventurers for centuries.

According to the myth, the legendary city of El Dorado was hidden deep within the Amazon basin, a place of untold riches and unimaginable beauty. The search for El Dorado has captivated the hearts and minds of explorers and adventurers for centuries, but the city was never found.

The legend of El Dorado can be traced back to the Muisca people of Colombia, who believed that El Dorado was a king or a god. The Muisca people practice a ritual where their leader, the Zipa, covers himself in gold and gold dust and then dips himself in a sacred lake - Lake Guatavita, while his attendants throw objects made of gold, emeralds, and precious stones into the lake. This ceremony led many to believe that the city of El Dorado was concealed beneath the waters of the lake.

The legend of El Dorado spread widely when Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada began his expedition to the interior of Colombia in 1536. Quesada heard rumors of a city of gold and was determined to find it. He and his men searched for El Dorado for months, but they never found it. However, Quesada did encounter the Muisca people and conquered them, bringing an end to their civilization.

The legend eventually lost its hold on people's imaginations, but it still captures our fascination today.

While we may never know if the mythical city of El Dorado ever existed, we can appreciate the incredible hop variety that bears its name. The El Dorado hop is a testament to the power of nature and the incredible flavors that can be derived from it.
