ABC's Plum-tastic Christmas: Sip, Savour, Celebrate

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

The story of plum cake in India goes back in time when the East India Company brought this fruity delight to our shores. But, our desi twist to things didn't take long to kick in. We Indians love our flavours as diverse as our festivals, and plum cake was no exception.

In the lands of Thalassery, year 1833 a British planter named Murdoch Brown strolled into town cradling a rich plum cake straight from England. Eager to recreate this culinary marvel, he approached the local baking maestro, Mambally Bapu. Forget yeast, Bapu swapped it with locally brewed liquor – a genius move that birthed the Indian tradition of Christmas cakes. Instead of French brandy, he went local, infusing cashew apple and kadalippazham (a banana variant). Thus, the Indian tradition of Christmas cakes took a swirly, boozy turn.

Now, moving to the vibrant land of Goa, here the Christmas cakes donned a unique and different avatar. Flour and butter took a backseat as Goan staples like coconut milk, rice flour, and ghee grabbed the limelight. Baked on stovetop clay ovens with hot coals, these Baath cakes brought a coastal breeze to the Christmas table.

Plum cake has become the rockstar of Christmas celebrations. It's not just a cake; it's a tradition, a slice of festive history that we all eagerly await every year. The warm spices, the rich fruits, and that perfect balance of sweetness.
